Founded by Ian Adam-Smith 25 years ago, the Practice specialises in ‘The English Country House’.
Ian is a lover of beautiful things and a firm believer in lifestyle living which encompasses not only the Architecture but the Interiors within and Landscape beyond. Ian has the innate ability to take a blank canvas and create out of it something unexpected and compelling, joyful and harmonious – as witness his own homes too.
His experienced eye for developing dreams and turning them into a reality is at the same time tempered by his knowledge of the planning system, the property market and potential end values.
Ian’s eldest son, Mungo, continues the tradition, having inherited his Father’s enthusiasm for architectural detail. Mungo grew up in Lutyens territory like Ian and lived through the construction of several key houses in the development of the Practice. This combined with experience and knowledge from previously studying and working in London ensures the successful continuation of the family legacy. In addition to our UK projects, Ian is also working on several private houses in Barbados and the wider Caribbean area.
Our Practice has continued to grow and flourish over the years and the team have now been involved in over 700 projects, primarily private houses and estates, across West Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey and further afield.
We have a dedicated team of Architects, Technologists and Architectural Assistants who will guide you through the creative journey, from concept to completion. Ian, Mungo and the team work closely with a large number of estate agents, search agents, surveyors, interior and landscape designers and other specialist consultants taking a holistic approach and encouraging collaboration.
Ian and the team are well known for carefully arranged individual designs, built for real people – within a scholarly framework, yet without the need to be overly rigid. Our projects range from ‘Glass Boxes’ to Georgian rectories, however increasingly the team are creating what appear to be ‘period houses that have evolved’ but are in fact high specification new build houses. We have also worked on important houses by Lutyens, Voysey, Shaw and Lorimer, taking great pleasure and care to restore many of these interesting homes to their original splendour.
The vision is one of a complete and coherent whole, capturing the heart and soul of each individual project. We spend time listening to, understanding and interpreting our client’s needs, becoming trusted confidantes, and often life-long friends, along the way. This, alongside our personal touch, is what we believe underpins our ever-growing list of loyal and repeat clients.
Based in a group of barns in the West Sussex countryside, the Practice takes on projects ranging in build cost from £250,000 to significantly larger projects. We enjoy designing a joyful extension as much as producing an estate wide masterplan. Most of the Practice’s work comes through word of mouth and personal recommendation having built a reputation for discreetly delivering characterful and charming homes.
